Syringe. A gloved hand gently squeezes a hypoder- mic syringe held pointing upwards to expel bubbles of air from its contents. This is done before giv- ing an injection to prevent bubbles of air being introduced into the patient's bloodstream, which could cause an embolism (blockage of an artery).
