Stethoscope. A medical instrument known as a stethoscope, used to listen to sounds within the body. It consists of two earpieces (lower left, white), tubing, and a round sound-detecting device with a diaphragm. The diaphragm is pressed against the patient's body to hear internal sounds. A stethoscope is particularly useful in diagnosing respiratory ailments of the lungs, and abnormalities in the beat and rhythm of the heart.
