Cloth fibres. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the fibres of a cloth tourniquet, used for taking blood samples. A tourniquet tied around the upper arm restricts blood flow, causing the veins to stand up for easy access. With repeated use, it can become contaminated with bacteria and, as here, with blood (red blood cell, lower left). Magnification: x580 at 6x6cm size.
