Butterfly needle. Intravenous (IV) needle with a plastic "butterfly" housing. A needle housing is termed a cannula. Needles of this design are used when short-term IV access is needed, such as when administering a dose of drugs. A more securely fastened needle would be used for long-term therapy (such as providing an IV "drip").
