Blood receptacle. Technician inspecting a cardiotomy reservoir, a piece of medical equipment used to collect blood from the heart or chest cavity. The inspection is carried out under UV light. This device is used in operations where large amounts of blood must be drained, such as those involving incisions in the heart. The blood is stored and returned to the patient's circulation. This procedure risks damaging the patient's blood cells or returning dangerous clots or bubbles to the circulation, so reservoirs are designed to minimise turbulence, and contain filters and bubble traps.
