Blood receptacle manufacture. Technician fitting a cover on a cardiotomy reservoir, a piece of medical equipment used to collect blood from the heart or chest cavity. The reservoir will then be vacuum sealed. This device is used in operations where large amounts of blood must be drained, such as those involving incisions in the heart. The blood is stored and returned to the patient's circulation. This procedure risks damaging the patient's blood cells or returning dangerous clots or bubbles to the circulation, so reservoirs are designed to minimise turbulence, and contain filters and bubble traps.
