Caption

Sterile enclosure. Nurse putting equipment through an airlock into a sterile bubble chamber. This is used to provide a sterile environment for children with severe immune deficiency. They can be made seriously ill by micro-organisms that would present no danger to someone with a healthy immune system. Immune deficiency can be caused by exposure to radiation, infectious diseases (such as AIDS, the acquired immune deficiency syndrome) or genetic factors. Photographed at the Necker children's hospital, Paris, France.
