Sterile equipment. Sterilised equipment in a bubble chamber. This is used to provide a sterile environment for children with severe immune deficiency who are highly susceptible to infections. Airlocks at either end (left, right) allow equipment to be added or removed. Openings in the front of the chamber are covered by plastic tubes (pink) ending in gloves, allowing staff to manipulate objects inside. Immune deficiency can be caused by exposure to radiation, infectious diseases (such as AIDS, the acquired immune deficiency syndrome) or genetic factors. Photographed at the Necker children's hospital, Paris, France.
