Digital thermometer displaying a reading of 39.6 degrees Celsius and fever-reducing pills. Normal body temperature is around 37 degrees Celsius, so this thermometer indicates an elevated temperature or fever. Most fevers are caused by bacterial or viral infections, which cause the immune system to act on the brain to raise body temperature in an attempt to destroy the invading microorganisms. Anti-pyretic (fever-reducing) drugs can be taken to treat a high temperature, however treatment should also be directed at the underlying cause.
