Suction abortion machine. Nurse assembling a machine that is used for the surgical abortion of unwanted pregnancies. A plastic curette (scraping instrument, not seen) attached to a tube is inserted into the uterus through the vagina. This is used to scrape the foetus and placenta away from the uterus wall. The remains are removed into a container by gentle suction through the tube. Women may elect to have an abortion (termination) for personal reasons, because the pregnancy may endanger their health, or because there is a high chance that the child may suffer from a genetic or birth defect.
