Straitjacket. This piece of restrictive clothing is used in the treatment and management of disruptive and violent behaviour in psychiatric patients. A straitjacket fits onto the patient like a coat except it has overlong arms. The arms are folded over the front of the patient and the excess material is tied securely behind the patient's back, immobilising the patient's arms and hands. Mental illnesses associated with violent episodes include some forms of schizophrenia and antisocial personality disorder.
