Full-term pregnant woman undergoing an ultrasound examination, showing the technician holding the probe to her swollen abdomen. Ultrasound imaging uses high-frequency sound waves to produce an image of the developing foetus and is used to monitor growth, to evaluate pregnancy complications and to diagnose such complications as hydrocephaly, dwarfism, spinal defects and heart conditions. In some instances the images may indicate and assist surgery on the foetus.
