Pre-natal ultrasound scan, showing the probe held against the woman's abdomen & resulting images at left. Fetal sonography is routinely used to scan pregnant women for the early detection of a number of disorders. It also affords many parents the first "view" of their child. An image is produced by passing ultrasonic waves through the abdomen & recording the reflected waves that arise from the different tissues encountered. Ultrasound has the advantages of being safe, non-invasive & may be used repeatedly during pregnancy, unlike conventional X-ray methods.
