Doppler ultrasound of pregnant woman. Dr Philippe Saada holds an ultrasound emitter while scanning a 22 week pregnant woman. He is looking at a video screen which shows blood flow inside the head of the unborn baby. Blood flow appears yellow within the dark oval cranium. Dr Saada refined this doppler technique by linking ultrasound equipment to a numeric colour video to obtain such high- definition images. Doppler ultrasound uses high- frequency sound waves to detect body tissues of different density, diagnose disease, and register moving particles like blood. Photographed at the Ultrasound Centre at Montrouge, Paris.
