Doppler ultrasound scan of neck. Male patient has the carotid artery in his neck scanned by doppler ultrasound. The operator holds a small transducer on the patient's neck while examining blood flow (coloured areas) in the artery, as seen on the screen at upper right. Doppler ultrasound scanning can be used to detect turbulence in the flow of blood around the body, which can reveal narrowing of the arteries due to fatty plaques (atherosclerosis), a blood clot, or aneurysm (swelling of a blood vessel). The transducer emits high-frequency sound waves which reflect off moving blood. The technique is harmless and causes no pain.
