Echocardiography. Man having an echocardiography (ultrasound) test to evaluate the health of his heart. The doctor is holding a tran- sducer to his chest in order to produce an image of his heart on the monitor (lower right). Electr- ocardiogram (ECG) electrodes on the man's chest (on his shoulder at lower left, for example) show when his heart is beating, allowing the ultrasound image to be interpreted. Echocardiography is a technique used to study the heart's structure and function by "bouncing" high-frequency sound waves off it. The transducer emits and receives sound waves. Echocardiography is used in diagnosing heart disorders and for monitoring heart function.
