Ultrasound scanning. View of a male doctor using ultrasound scanning to study the blood circulation in the neck of a patient. The doctor is using a hand-held transducer which emits high-frequency sound (ultrasound) waves. The reflection of the waves from within the patient is detected by the transducer. The ultrasound waves are reflected in different ways by different tissues. The image created is displayed on a screen (upper centre). Ultrasound can be used for foetal scanning, diagnosing organ diseases and for detecting blood flow.
