Ultrasound scanning. View of a female patient undergoing ultrasound scanning to study the blood circulation in her neck. The operator is using a hand-held transducer which emits high-frequency sound (ultrasound) waves. Special gel has been applied to the patient's neck to aid contact. The reflection of the ultrasound waves from within the patient is detected by the transducer. The ultrasound waves are reflected in different ways by different tissues. The image created is displayed on a screen (upper centre). Ultrasound can be used for foetal scanning, diagnosing organ diseases and for detecting blood flow.
