Foetal ultrasound. Doctor performing an ultrasound scan on a pregnant woman. Ultrasound is a diagnostic technique in which very high frequency sound waves are passed into the body through a transducer (lower centre, on abdomen). The reflected echoes are detected and used to build an image of the foetus in the uterus (upper centre, on monitor). Ultrasound scanning is often performed during pregnancy as a routine check-up. The size of the foetus is assessed and any abnormalities in growth or development can be discovered.
