Ultrasound scan. Doctor showing a pregnant woman an ultrasound scan of her developing baby. Ultrasound is a diagnostic technique in which very high frequency sound waves are sent into the body via a transducer. The waves bounce off the developing foetus in the womb and the returning echoes are used to create an image, which can be printed out, as seen here. Ultrasound is routinely performed during pregnancy. It is a safe, non-invasive method of checking the growth and development of a foetus in utero.
