Pregnancy ultrasound. Pregnant woman undergoing an ultrasound scan. The doctor is scanning her abdomen with a transducer that emits high frequency sound waves. The reflection of these sound waves by body tissues allows an echo map of the developing foetus to be constructed (seen on monitor at upper centre). Ultrasound scanning is used to monitor foetal growth in order to estimate the date of delivery. It can also detect multiple pregnancies and gross abnormalities such as spina bifida.
