Foetal ultrasound. Gynaecologist studying 3-D ultrasound scans of a foetus. Ultrasound is an imaging technique in which high- frequency sound waves are aimed into the body, and their reflections picked up. Computer analysis of the reflections allows a detailed image of internal structures to be built up. In pregnancy, such scans can be used to assess the health and development of the foetus. Any problems can then be detected early, which increases the chance of a cure.
