Ultrasound scan of a uterus being examined by a gynaecologist. This 3-D model of the internal (endometrial) cavity of the uterus was built up by combining numerous 2-D ultrasound images. Ultrasound scanning uses sound waves to build up an image of internal structures. A transducer is held against the skin. It emits high-frequency sound and builds up an image using the sound reflected back from within the body. It is mainly used for revealing the structure of hollow organs and vessels, and can be used to diagnose many types of disorder.
