Ultrasound scan. Doctor using ultrasound to investigate a patient's injured knee. The ultrasound scanner emits sound waves which are reflected back to the scanner. The distance the waves have travelled is measured and an image of the injury is built up. The doctor is looking at a computer screen, where an image of the patient's knee is displayed. Knee ultrasound is very good at diagnosing tendinitis (tendon inflammation) and synovial or meniscal (cartilage) cysts.
