Pregnancy ultrasound. Expectant parents watching as a sonographer points to an image of their unborn child on a monitor. The image has been produced using a transducer (in hand), an instrument used to scan the abdomen of a pregnant woman. The transducer emits high- frequency sound waves and detects the reflected echoes. The results are used to build an image of the developing foetus in the womb. This is a safe, non-invasive procedure used routinely to assess the growth and health of the developing foetus. The presence of a doctor (left) suggests that an abnormality has been detected.
