Ultrasound scanning, conceptual artwork. The scanner itself is at centre. Ultrasound scanning uses high frequency sound waves to image the body. The waves are reflected by internal structures, building up a picture of them. At upper left is a normal scan, with a doppler scan on the laptop at lower right. Doppler scanning uses the doppler effect, the shift in frequencies when sound waves are reflected from a moving object, to provide information on internal movements, such as blood flow (red patch).
