Ultrasound room in a hospital. At centre is the ultrasound scanner, which uses sound waves to build internal images of the body. A transducer is held against the skin over the area that is to be studied. The transducer emits high-frequency sound waves and detects the reflected echoes. The results are used to build the image, which is displayed on the monitor.
