Pregnancy ultrasound examination. Hospital doctor using an ultrasound transducer to scan the abdomen of a pregnant woman who is in her third trimester. Ultrasound works by emitting high-frequency sounds and then detecting the echoes caused by the sounds being reflected by internal body parts. The results are displayed on the screen at upper right, showing the foetus developing in its mother's uterus. This safe, and non-invasive procedure is used routinely in pregnancy to assess the growth and health of the unborn child, and to detect any abnormalities. Photographed at St. Mary's Hospital in Lacor, Gulu, Uganda.
