Pregnancy ultrasound. Obstetrician using an ultrasound transducer to scan the abdomen of a woman in the early stages of pregnancy. The transducer (held against her abdomen) emits high frequency sound waves that are echoed back and used to create an image of the foetus inside the mother's womb (displayed at upper left). This is a safe and non-invasive method of assessing the health of the developing foetus.
