Medical diagnostic imaging using a positron emisson tomography (PET) scanner. PET scan studies have been carried out primarily on the brain, where it is used to measure blood flow, oxygen utilization & blood volume in relation to dementia, cerebralvascular diseases & tumours. The scanner is linked to a cyclotron (particle accelerator) which generates short-lived isotopes. Tracers labelled with these isotopes are injected into the patient prior to the scan. The patient's head is placed in a ring of detectors, which detect positron emissions from the injected isotopes. The information is used to construct an image of a thin slice of the brain.
