Mammography. View of a woman patient (at right) undergoing breast screening, assisted by a radiographer. Mammography is an X- ray technique which reveals details of internal breast tissues. The breast is compressed between two plastic sheets; breast tissue is then exposed to X-rays to produce a mammogram image. The major use of mammography is in the detection of breast cancer, since the appearance of cancers on a mammogram differs from that of benign conditions such as cysts. Small tumours can be detected at an early stage and may be treated in a conservative manner without resort to major breast surgery.
