Mammography. View of the torso of a woman patient during breast screening. Mammography is an X-ray technique which reveals details of internal breast tissues. The breast is compressed between two flat surfaces (as seen here), and then exposed to X-rays to produce a mammogram image. The major use of mammography is in the detection of breast cancer. On a mammogram, cancers can be dis- tinguished from benign breast conditions such as cysts. Small tumours can thus be detected at an early stage, and may be treated in a conservative manner without having to resort to major breast surgery.
