Barium enema procedure. Woman undergoes a barium enema X-ray examination in which she has been positioned on her back. The barium is administered from an enema bag (not seen) through a tube into the patient's rectum. The radiographer controls an X-ray machine that is being moved over the patient's abdomen. Video monitors (at top left) show the passage of the barium enema which has highlighted the large intestine of the patient. The barium enema is a suspension of barium sulphate that serves as a radio-opaque contrast medium under X-ray. Disease or abnormalities of the intestine can be detected.
