Osteoporosis bone scanning. A woman lies under an Dexa X-ray machine in a test for early signs of the bone disease osteoporosis. She is lying on a cassette containing the film that will produce the final X-ray image. A radiologist is operating the machine. Victims of osteoporosis suffer from brittle, easily fractured bones. The disease is caused by loss of the protein tissue inside bones, and is usually diagnosed by X-ray. Osteoporosis is very common in post-menopausal women and the elderly; on average, people lose a third of their skeleton's weight by the age of 70. The only treatment is preventive as there is no cure.
