Cardiac catheterisation. Surgeons performing a cardiac catheterisation procedure to obtain images of the blood flow in the arteries around the heart. The patient, under a local anaesthetic, has a fine tube (catheter) inserted into an artery in the groin or thigh. The catheter is manoeuvred along blood vessels to the heart. Once the catheter is in place, a dye which is opaque to X-rays is injected to outline the blood flow in the arteries on X-ray film. The results of this procedure are being viewed on the monitor at centre right. The medical staff are wearing shielding under their surgical overalls to protect them from X-rays.
