Barium swallow X-ray. Elderly male patient swallowing barium during an X-ray examination. Barium, a suspension of barium sulphate, is opaque to the X-rays produced by the X-ray machine at right. This procedure enables the detection of diseases or abnormalities of the oesophagus, stomach and upper intestine.
