Bone densitometer. Woman undergoing a bone densitometer scan. She has her forearm immersed in a osteometer (densitometer). A bone densitometer is a special X-ray machine that measures the density of bones. The doctor is observing the results of the scan which are displayed on the monitor at upper centre. Densitometry is used to diagnose the bone- wasting disease osteoporosis, which is common in post-menopausal women due to decreased production of hormones which maintain bone mass. The condition causes gradual loss of bone mass and increased risk of fracture.
