Bone densitometer. View of a woman's forearm undergoing a densitometry scan. The forearm is immersed in an osteometer (densitometer). A bone densitometer is a special X-ray machine that measures the density of bones. The results of the scan are displayed on a monitor (not seen). Densitometry is used to diagnose the bone- wasting disease osteoporosis, which is common in post-menopausal women due to decreased production of hormones which maintain bone mass. The condition causes gradual loss of bone mass and increased risk of fracture.
