Mammogram. Female patient undergoing an X-ray or mammogram of her left breast. This diagnostic technique reveals the fine detail of internal breast tissue: its main application is in the early detection of breast cancer. The breast is compressed between a plastic sheet and a metal X-ray plate, as seen here. The tissues are then exposed to low doses of X-rays, which produce an image on a film or fluorescent screen. Early detection of breast cancer significantly improves the prognosis. Mammograms are often performed as a routine check- up in older women.
