Bone density testing. Radiographer using a densitometer to scan a woman's heel. The portable scanner utilizes X-rays to measure bone mass (also known as bone mineral density - BMD). It determines the concentration of calcified material in bone and therefore the patient's risk of fracture. It is the main diagnostic technique used to identify osteoporosis, a bone wasting disease mainly affecting postmenopausal women.
