Radiologist studying mammograms (breast X-rays) on a lightbox. This is being done as part of the compilation of a national UK mammogram database. This database will allow doctors easy access to thousands of mammograms. The project standardizes scans of mammograms, making it easier to compare them. This allows quicker and easier diagnosis of any abnormalities the mammograms may show. Faster and more accurate diagnosis of breast cancer allows treatment to begin earlier, which dramatically increases the chances of curing the disease. The project harnesses the power of a supercomputer network called The Grid, which can be accessed from a desktop computer.
