Examining breast X-rays. Radiologist examining a series of breast X-rays (mammograms) on a lightbox. The X-rays reveal the fine detail of soft tissues in the brest, therefore, this technique (mammography) is the main way of screening women for breast cancer. From the X-rays a radiologist can distinguish between cancerous tumours and other benign conditions such as cysts. This type of screening can detect tumours at an early stage, when they are more easily treated.
