Barium enema examination. Radiographer studying the large intestine of a woman undergoing a barium enema X-ray examination. During the procedure, white barium is administered into the patient's rectum. The patient's pelvis is then X-rayed. Video monitors show the passage of the barium in the large intestine of the patient. The barium enema is a suspension of barium sulphate that serves as a radio-opaque contrast medium under X-ray. Disease or abnormalities of the intestine can be detected.
