Demonstration of diagnostic imaging using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), a high resolution, cost technique that is able to distinguish between different densities of soft tissues of the brain, to identify tumours of the central nervous system and the spinal cord, to show multiple sclerosis, is now being more specifically applied to other organs. NMR creates an image by recording the bodies response to an intense magnetic field, which is interrupted by radio pulses, and energy is released and recorded. Here the patient lies surrounded by the superconducting magnets which produce the magnetic field.
