Brain mapping. Woman undergoing image-guided transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) brain mapping. The figure-of-8 coil (upper left) has an electric current passing through it, producing a magnetic field that induces an electric current within a discrete area of the subject's brain. The area targeted is mapped to a scan of her brain via trackers on the glasses (upper right) and coil (not seen). The subject experiences different physiological reactions depending upon where the electrical current is aimed. For example, when placed over areas of the primary motor cortex it elicits movements in specific parts of the body. This information is used to map functions to areas of the brain.
