MRI scanning. Hospital staff analysing data produced by a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner (upper right). MRI is a diagnostic technique that produces cross-sectional images of parts of the body, as seen on the monitor (centre). The scanner uses a strong magnetic field to produce radio emissions from hydrogen atoms in the body. This produces images that reveal the soft tissue structures, such as organs, as well as bones.
