They are used in the diagnostic technique of radionuclide or gamma scanning. Since gamma radiation is harmful to living tissues when repeatedly absorbed, the radionuclides are carefully stored and handled to ensure that little radiation is absorbed by health workers. Preparing the dose of radionuclides in a glove box prevents contamination with radiation.
