Doctor performing a gastroscopy (endoscopy) examination on a woman patient. Gastroscopy is used to examine the inside of the oesophagus (gullet), stomach & duodenum using a flexible, fibre-optic endoscope. The flexible endsocope (dark tube) contains bundles of optical fibres which relay an illuminated image of the gut to the monitor. The device beneath the screen is the endoscope's light source. Much skill is required in feeding the tip of the flexible tube down the gut and through various obstacles - the entrance to & exit from the stomach, for example. The technique is routinely used in the diagnosis of cancer & ulcers.
