Surgeon using a rigid-type endoscope, an instrument that allows him to see inside the body & to perform relatively simple surgical procedures in a minimally-invasive way. Various types have been developed for specific sites: arthroscopes for joints; laparoscopes for the abdominal cavity & bronchoscopes for the lungs. The metal tube contains optical fibres that allow the surgeons an illuminated view of the inside of the body; it may also contain various remotely-controlled instruments, for example, for the collection of biopsy specimens.
