Coelioscope examination. Surgeon in an operating theatre performs a coelioscope examination on a patient. The hand-held coelioscope is a type of endoscope, used to examine the intestines and related organs in the abdomen. It is a steel tube containing optical fibres, a light source, and often small surgical instruments which may be manipulated by remote control. As here, the field of view may be relayed to a video monitor (top left). This procedure is typically used to examine disorders of the bowel, such as intestinal ulcers or cancer. Only a small incision needs to be made to introduce the coelioscope, otherwise known as "keyhole" surgery.
